Question:

Hey, Mark!

I kinda' feel like we're friends, so I wanted to share something neat with you that happened to me. Guess what? I got a postcard in the mail that said I won a neat prize. I won either a new car, a TV, or a $1,000 savings bond. I'm so excited to see what I've won and just want to tell everyone I know. How cool is that?

Hold on, Sam. I don't want to burst your bubble, but I have to warn you that you may not have won anything! Sometimes those postcards are just a scam and they are just trying to get money out of you. Usually if you win a big prize, they don't notify you in a postcard, they'll actually call you or even come out to your home. Be careful because sometimes a company may ask you to pay some sort of fee or money first so you can get your prize, they might call it a processing fee, or they might require you to buy something else to get the prize. Like they might say you won the TV, but first you need to buy a T-shirt. Usually what they are selling is either really poor quality or is way overpriced. Sometimes they won't even send you the item you thought you bought.

One way to check it out is to call the number on the postcard. If they try to get you to buy anything else or pay any money at all, hang up. It's pretty crummy that some people do things like that, but it's good to know about it so you don't waste any money on something you don't want.

Did You Know?

One of the latest is "We want your car for sale. We'll send you a cashier's check for more than the amount and you send back the difference." You send back the difference, the check is not real and you are out both amounts!!
