Question:

My soccer team qualified for an international soccer tournament in England. I want to bring home some cool stuff for my friends, but I'm not sure if they will take U.S. money. Do you know how that works?

International soccer tournament? Wow, you must be really good! If you see David Beckham or Michael Owen while you are in England, get an autograph for me!

This is a great question, June, so see if this helps. Each country has its own money system, and the bills and coins look different and are worth different amounts than our money here in the good ol' USA. If you want to see some cool pictures of other countries' currencies, you can go to our "Around the World" section on Bankjr.com.

In some places, you can use American money in Britain, but most of the time you have trade your dollars for pounds. Not your weight silly, that's what they call their money! There is an easy way to do this, though. You can go to your local bank here in the US and trade your US money for English currency. Banks have money from all over the world and will know exactly how to help you out. Don't be surprised at what the bank gives you back. The money from other countries looks very different and may be worth more or less than the US money you handed over. This all is based on the strength or weakness of the US dollar compared to other countries' currencies. That is an entirely different discussion that I won't bore you with today!

Anyway, be sure to trade your money for some British money at a bank before you go or when you arrive in England. Go prepared, and get some good stuff for your friends and good luck with the soccer tournament. You'll have to let us know how it goes!

Did You Know?

The term "pound" comes from the weight of a pound of Sterling Silver, which was what the British pound was valued after!
