Good question. We handle paper money all the time, so we probably should know whose pictures are on those bills! Here is a list of the money now printed by our federal government and the portraits on each one --

$1Pres. Geo. Washington
$2Pres. Thomas Jefferson
$5Pres. Abraham Lincoln
$10Alexander Hamilton
$20Pres. Andrew Jackson
$50Pres. Ulysses S. Grant
$100Benjamin Franklin

The $100 bill is the largest now being used in our country. A century ago, very large bills were also being printed. Here are those numbers and the names of people we picture on them.

$500Pres. William McKinley
$1000Pres. Grover Cleveland
$5000Pres. James Madison
$10,000Salmon Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Pres. Lincoln

If there any of these big bills around, they are being kept by people who collect money for a hobby. Each of these bills is worth more than the numbers printed on them. However, if you have one and want to use it at a local store, they are still legal tender or real money. The storeowner has to accept it and give you change.

Did You Know?

From 1879 through 1966, the U.S. Treasury would trade paper money (Legal Tender notes) for silver and gold coins.
