You all know the old saying, that money makes the world go around? Well, It's true, but only partly so. I'm gonna go off on this one, so sit back and read on!
Jane, you've got the right idea. When you're a kid, you're always looking for ways to earn more, because there's not very many easy ways to go about getting a "job" and
working 8 hours a day like your parents do. We take our chances as they come, whether it's a $20 bill in our birthday card or a dirty quarter lying on the sidewalk. It's hard sometimes because we see all of these cool
things to buy when we're watching TV, it seems that we need to have a huge pile of the green stuff around just so we can be happy. TV makes it seem that way, but it only seems that way, that is, it's only that way if you
let it be.
So you want to earn more money? That's a good thing, as long as you're willing to work for it. That's what makes our country great, almost anybody can work hard, work smart, play fair and
come out on top. At your age, 12, you've got an awesome situation. You can basically earn as much as you can work for, without having the pressure of a "real" job, one that you'll probably get in another 3-4 years. Why is that? Well, money's fine and all,
but make sure you still take time out to be a kid and have fun! Once you start in the working world, you're pretty much there until you retire, and that's a loooong time! Take some time to be yourself and don't get too fixed on the green stuff!
Think of things you like to do, things that other people need or want. Do you like kids? Well, babysitting could be right up your alley, and some girls I know make a lot of dough at that. Are you good at crafts or art?
Start your own little company making greeting cards, or scrapbooking supplies, things like that. You'd be suprised at how many adults would be willing to help you out when they realize you're determined to keep at something! If you're into being outside
and don't mind a little dirt, a lot of people (especially older folks) are looking for kids to mow lawns, cut bushes, water flowers, stuff like that. And, when winter is around, most adults would be stoked to have a kid show up on their doorstep and offer to take care
of the snow in the driveway for a few bucks!
Sit down with your parents and ask for their ideas too. If they see that you're willing to save some of what you earn, a lot of parents would be happy to help you get set up in whatever business you choose to do. Once you start, make sure that
the word gets out in your neighborhood: print flyers, make a sign, anything that will put your message into people's heads. And, most important of all: once you do get that phone call asking for your help, make sure you do an awesome job, every time! Nothing travels faster than good word-of-mouth! Good luck!
